Why is a healthy diet so important for me?
It is important to choose healthy carbohydrates. There are simple and complex carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates such as sugar are easily absorbed by the body leading to a rapid rise in blood sugar and should be consumed less. Complex carbohydrates such as whole grains maintain a steady release of insulin and avoid spikes in blood glucose.
It is recommended that we eat more complex carbohydrates than simple carbohydrates.
Some examples of foods high in simple carbohydrates include: sugar, fruit juice, white rice and refined flour. Examples of foods that consist of complex carbohydrates include: whole grains, millets and legumes.
