Why is a healthy diet so important for me?

Carbohydrates

There are complex and simple carbohydrates. On the whole, we should have more complex and less simple carbohydrates in our diet.

Complex carbohydrates such as whole grains maintain a steady release of insulin and avoid spikes in blood glucose. Examples of foods high in complex carbohydrates include whole grains, millets and legumes.

Simple carbohydrates are easily absorbed by the body and lead to a rapid rise in blood sugar. Some foods high in simple carbohydrates include sugar, fruit juice, white rice and refined flour. You should reduce the intake of foods high in simple carbohydrates.
